The Faculty of Management
– the past and the present
The first regular courses in
economics were offered in Sopot
already in the first years after WW II by the newly established College of
Marine Commerce (Wyższa Szkoła Handlu Morskiego
- WSHM) in Gdynia, located in our present Faculty
building (Sopot, Armii Krajowej Street 101).
In 1952 WSHM was renamed the Sopot College of Economics (Wyższa Szkoła Ekonomiczna
– WSE). The University of Gdansk was founded after the Economic College
merged with the Teacher’s College (Wyzsza
Szkoła Pedagogiczna) on 20th March 1970. Two out
of six faculties of the University were concerned with economics: Economics of
Production and Economics of Transport. The Faculty of Economics of Production
was transformed into the Faculty of
Management and the Faculty of Economics of Transport into the Faculty of Economics on the 1st
October 1993.
The number of faculties dealing with
economics gradually increased (the Faculty of Management – previously the
Faculty of Economics of Industry – was established in 1968), departments (institutes) changed
their profiles. In the initial period 1945 to 1950 the courses covered general
economics. After the College of Economics (WSE) was established there were
three specialised faculties: Finance, Industry and Transport (in 1951-1959;
these were later merged into the faculty of Industry And Transport in 1960-1969). There were initially two
departments at the Faculty of Economics of Production of Gdansk University:
Economics of Industry, and Finance and Accounting. The number of departments
has increased to five over the years. These departments were: Economic
Cybernetics and Computer Science, Economics and Organisation of Trade of Goods
and Services, Economics and Organisation of Production, Finance and Banking,
Organisation and Management.
Nowadays,
we offer three main degree courses at the Faculty of Management.
These are:
·
Computer Science and
Econometrics,
·
Finance and Accounting,
·
Management.
It is possible to study full-time or
part-time. Candidates who successfully pass the entrance examination become the
members of the community of the Faculty consisting of about 2,000 full-time
students, including 520 first year students. There are 171 academic teachers at
the Faculty (36 professor and 135 tutors and assistants), and a certain number
of teachers from other organizational units of Gdansk University.
Our Faculty gives you a unique
opportunity to spend the following five years in an interesting and creative
way. We are convinced that you will make the most of the time spent with us.
The rich syllabus and the stimulating class environment will give you extensive
knowledge of Polish, European and world economy, about the principles of
rational management and about making the right business decisions.
The educational process is geared
towards forming a profiled graduate, who must combine specialist knowledge with
comprehensively educational background, because it is the combination of the
two that will enable them to meet the demands of the transforming economy.
During the first two semesters
students divide their time between the study of economics (business management
and economic analysis) and general subjects, where they can choose from a wide
range of lectures. Beginning with the third semester students choose one of the areas in which they want to
specialise (depending on the department) which then becomes the focus of their
study.
The detailed structure of courses is
shown on the chart on page 8.
The structure of the curriculum
guarantees that our graduate learn ‘something about everything’ and
‘everything about something’, consequently they will connect
general knowledge of various economic disciplines with thorough knowledge of
the chosen specialities. The professional qualifications acquired at our
Faculty will make you a sought after employee; job openings in businesses and
public institutions will be waiting for you. The labour market during the past
few years demonstrated that unemployment hardly affects economists, and thus
the graduates of our Faculty. Therefore, it is worth to study at the Faculty of
Management, a business school with decades of good traditions, practice and
history.
The programmes of studies for the
presented departments and specialities are printed on the following pages.
There are numbers of hours assigned to each subject and the layout of subjects
on time scale. However, it does not mean that students must study all subjects
according to the prospectus. These plans are just one of many possible ways of
achieving the Bachelor’s or Master’s degrees. It is possible to
exchange some subjects for others or to study them during a different semester,
because the new regulations allow highly individualised programmes of studies.
Credit points of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) assigned to each
subject allow for programme individualisation.
